About Shepherd of the Hills Outdoor Drama
Branson's Shepherd of the Hills Outdoor Drama presents a captivating narrative of life in the Ozarks during the late 1800s, inspired by the renowned novel by Harold Bell Wright. If you're curating your Branson itinerary, Branson Show Tickets simplifies the process of discovering unforgettable performances like this one. An outstanding ensemble of actors and animals brings the story to life on an intricately designed outdoor stage. Attendees can expect a production that showcases all the elements of a largely true-to-life tale, including thrilling gunfights, a real burning cabin, a touching romance, and humor that helps us navigate challenging times.
Since its debut in 1959, the play has maintained its popularity over the decades. Participation in the production often involves family and friends; many current actors have relatives who performed in earlier years, making Shepherd of the Hills a cherished tradition within the community and a rite of passage for aspiring theater professionals. The heartwarming story unfolds on a stage comparable to a football field, featuring a cast of around 90 actors, along with horses, mules, donkeys, and sheep.
The novel, Shepherd of the Hills, marks the second work by Harold Bell Wright, an American author credited as the first to sell a million copies of a fiction book. This story quickly gained traction as readers were eager to learn about the challenging lives of the mountain folk in Southern Missouri and Northern Arkansas. The tale has inspired several film adaptations, the most notable being a 1941 Hollywood version starring John Wayne as young Matt. However, nothing can rival the experience of witnessing Shepherd of the Hills performed live on an outdoor stage, where audiences feel intimately connected to the action and become engrossed in the lives of characters like young Matt, Sammy Lane, Aunt Mollie, and Wash Gibbs.
